I've added links to three articles giving further information about the next version of SharePoint. They are derived from speeches at Fusion 2002: SPSFAQ080134 - Microsoft Plans Scalable, Enterprise SharePoint 2.0 Upgrade in Mid 2003, CRN.com July 2002, SPSFAQ080136 - New Solution Offerings On Microsoft's Agenda, CRN.com, July 2002, SPSFAQ080135 - Microsoft Gives Sneak Peak of SharePoint 2.0 At Fusion 2002, CRN July 2002.
They all confirm Microsoft's commitment to making SharePoint more scalable for large enterprises and also having more personalisation. One mentions that Microsoft has sold 7 million CALs. So I don't see the licencing model changing too much soon! Nothing was mentioned about better backup/restore though.
Also that "Sharepoint 2.0 will feature SharePoint Team Services 2.0, integration of robust Windows Media multimedia technologies and an enhanced search function that allows users to search by people and team sites". Which all sounds like good news to me.
